Greetings, I'm looking at property in this beautiful town and I'm blown away at the simplicity of the community. I have dreamed of an affordable, off grid, location in the mountains to have some rest from this hectic world. However, Im a little confused at the layout according to my research. It would appear that houses and roads (according to google), are not in line with the official plat provided by the website. Is it kind of a do as you will environment, or am I mistaken? There appears to be a very straight-forward coventant and I noticed the proposed third ammendment. How long before this is adopted, and who would I contact to get more information about practical living in this area? Thanks in advance, Jordan.

Keep in mind there are easements for all roads and alleys. Let's say the easement is 60 feet wide for N/S street the road meanders its way generally through it, sometimes straight line, most times not. Like Larry said, there are/were pins at every corner of blocks, lots, roads and alleys. Some may have been pulled out by owners that have vacated easements.
Hi Jordan, yes, it's beautiful. Jasper plat is very accurate, each property has pins that mark every corner and is consistent with the maps found online. The online tools arent that accurate with their GPS projections, because of the somewhat extreme altitude and grade of the earth in the area. The Rio Grande County Assesor maps seem to be pretty good but still not perfect. If you're interested in a property, go visit and locate the property marker pins. No, the Rio Grande County zoning and building codes all apply to Jasper and is strictly enforced. Also, there is already a covenant in place and in force for all propery owners. There is a proposed update which eventually will pass but plenty of rules apply. As for practical living, off grid is anything but simple and practical. It's often complicated and a lot of work. Hauling water, charging batteries, using resources sparingly, driving long distances over rough roads to get simple things. Also, cost of building (yes, must be permitted, to code and inspected) is typically more expensive, time consuming and difficuly due to the remote nature of Jasper and getting folks to drive up to do the work, heavy equipment, etc.
All of that said, Jasper is a wonderful place, great to visit and see for yourself.
Cheers!
