Monte Vista Gives $10,000 for Road to Mine District, datelined Monte Vista, 28 February. This is the 1913 boom seen from the valley floor rather than from the mine, and it is the best evidence in the collection of how seriously people took it.

Scenes rivaling the most enthusiastic in the Leadville mining boom were enacted today at a mass meeting of three hundred leading citizens of this city and the surrounding country. In less than five minutes $10,000 was raised to finance the rebuilding of the wagon road between Jasper and the new mining camp of Stunner.

The money went to a joint committee of the county commissioners and the business men, named as R. R. Mitchell, L. L. Fassett and city engineer James Riley, with instructions to start work immediately. Completing the strip would give Monte Vista a direct road of thirty nine miles into the district.

The $10,000 is a road subscription, not a claim about gold, and it is carried in the ledger at nothing for that reason. It is money people actually produced, which is more than can be said for most of the figures here. The Colorado Statesman noted ten weeks later that the road had been put in shape and that this greatly facilitated development of the Miser property.
